80 new aircraft for short and medium-haul routes
Lufthansa Group has placed an order for 80 new and highly efficient aircraft to serve short- and medium-haul routes. The carrier's fleet will consist of 40 Airbus A220-300 aircraft and 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. Lufthansa Group also holds 120 additional purchase options for short- and medium-haul aircraft, which will support the fleet in the coming years. The fleet modernization will be the largest such undertaking in the history of Lufthansa Group. The delivery of the first A220 aircraft is scheduled for 2026. The Airbus aircraft will serve the new Lufthansa City Airlines.
Reduction of CO2 emissions
The new, efficient aircraft are part of efforts towards more sustainable air travel. The investment in fleet modernization is expected to bring tangible benefits to Lufthansa in terms of reducing carbon dioxide emissions released during flights. Fleet replacement is an important part of the carrier's strategy alongside investments in SAF and modern technologies such as Aeroshark coatings, which improve the aircraft's aerodynamics.
