More Train Tickets Purchased Online
More and more people are choosing to buy train tickets online. According to the latest statistics presented by the Office of Rail Transport, the share of digital channels in ticket sales has exceeded 40 percent. In 2023, as much as 42.9 percent of all tickets were sold through applications and online sales systems, an increase of 8 percentage points compared to the previous year.
At the same time, the popularity of ticket offices at stations and terminals is decreasing, with a share of 25.5 percent, representing a decline of 3.8 percentage points. Sales of tickets at stationary ticket machines decreased slightly to 7.7 percent (a drop of 0.7 pp), while sales at ticket machines on trains remained at 1.1 percent. Tickets purchased from conductors accounted for 18.4 percent of all transactions, a decrease of 2.4 percentage points. Other distribution channels accounted for 4.5 percent of ticket sales.
Despite the declining popularity of ticket offices, they still play an important role in the sale of more expensive tickets, such as period and multi-ride tickets. The value share of ticket offices in ticket sales amounted to 31.5 percent, indicating that Poles still go to ticket offices when they need to spend a larger sum on a ticket. In digital channels, ticket machines, and from conductors, single-ride tickets dominate.
It is worth noting that although the share of digital sales channels has exceeded the value of ticket offices for the first time, reaching 41.6 percent of revenues, it is still evident that cheaper tickets are mainly purchased this way. The Office of Rail Transport emphasizes that despite the dynamic growth in online ticket sales, traditional ticket offices remain indispensable for purchasing higher-value tickets.
