Brussels Airlines announced that on October 1, 2024, they will cancel up to 80% of their flights due to a strike organized by airport security unions in Belgium. The decision was made following a request from Brussels Airport management, asking airlines to adjust their schedules in response to the planned industrial action.
Brussels Airlines, whose main hub is at Brussels Airport, will be one of the most affected carriers. In August, the airport served 2.4 million passengers and handled over 18,000 flights. Of the 203 Brussels Airlines flights scheduled for the strike day, 80% will be cancelled.
Passengers affected by the cancellations will be informed via email about available alternatives. The airline promises to make every effort to ensure that travelers reach their destinations as quickly as possible. Passengers will be offered options to rebook for earlier or later flights or reroute through other Lufthansa Group hubs.
Brussels Airlines expressed gratitude to its customers for their patience and to the staff for their hard work in resolving logistical issues. The airline has reinforced its service center staff, though longer wait times are expected due to the volume of necessary rebookings. Passengers are encouraged to check their contact details and reservation status through the airline’s website.
The strike is driven by difficult working conditions and cost-cutting measures imposed by airport management, despite rising profits. Workers complain about a lack of investment in staff and infrastructure, which has led to high sickness rates and recruitment challenges. The strike coincides with a planned protest in Brussels, which will also involve workers from the hospitality and retail sectors.
