Austrian Airlines takes off with sharkskin

Austrian Airlines adopts sharkskin technology

Austrian Airlines, following the example of another Lufthansa Group carrier, SWISS, has decided to modernize its fleet. The Austrian carrier will initially apply the modern AeroShark technology to 4 of its 6 Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. The fleet upgrade process is expected to be completed by March 2025.

What are the properties of AeroShark?

AeroShark is a surface film system made up of transparent ribs about 50 micrometers in size. Developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF, the technology optimizes the aerodynamics of the aircraft, positively impacting fuel consumption.

Thanks to AeroShark, long-haul aircraft will save around 1% in fuel on a single flight. Over the course of a year, this translates to thousands of tons less harmful CO2 emissions.
