Lisbon to Gain a New Airport in Alcochete

Lizbona zyska nowe lotnisko w Alcochete

The Portuguese government has approved the construction of a new airport in Alcochete, approximately 35 kilometers east of Lisbon. The project, which will replace the overloaded Humberto Delgado Airport, is expected to cost between €8 billion and €9 billion and take six years to complete. The construction will be managed by ANA, the country's airport operator.

The new airport, named after poet Luís de Camões, will be built on the site of a former military training ground. Initially, it will feature two runways, allowing up to 90 flight operations per hour, with plans for future expansion to four runways. By 2050, passenger traffic is projected to exceed 100 million annually.

The decision to establish a single large airport reflects the government’s environmental priorities and aims to reduce noise pollution in the capital. Once the new airport is operational, the current one will be decommissioned and demolished.
